Those hours between dusk and dawn are lonely, stressful, unpredictable, and often filled with desperation and despair. On theother hand, I think we would all say that those hours are often filledwith our greatest challenges and our finest moments. Whether we arein the operating room, the emergency room, on the patient floors, inthe field, or piloting the rescue helicopter, we play a part in a dramathat will affect lives forever. When I think back on the events that markthe milestones and turning points in my medical career, they alwaysoccurred at night. In this book I have focused on a small group of emergency and criticalcare physicians, nurses, EMTs, paramedics, and medevac pilots andcrew. The medical scenes are based primarily on my own experiences asa surgeon. I had the very good fortune to receive expert input from a ten-year Army veteran who flew helicopters for eight years, the last four ofwhich she spent as an instructor at the Army’s Helicopter Pilot School.Currently she flies a medevac helicopter in the civilian sector. Thankyou, Jennifer, most profoundly—your technical advice and personalinsight made this a far finer book. Any errors or misrepresentationare mine alone, and I apologize for getting any critical details wrongdespite your patient and thorough explanations. My thanks also go to my first readers Connie, Diane, Eva, Paula, andRB, as well as to my editors, Ruth Sternglantz and Stacia Seaman, andto the generous proofreaders at Bold Strokes Books for making this abetter book.Sheri, thank you for seeing into my head with such dead-on accuracy.Great cover. To Lee, for being there in all ways, night and day. I thought you were in Vegas?”“Yeah, I was.” Tristan sank down on the ugly green vinylsofa that occupied one wall in the OR lounge and propped her feet upon a nearby chair. “But when I heard you all were having so much funback here, I left early.”Most of the Philadelphia Medical College surgeons andanesthesiologists were in Las Vegas for a trauma meeting all week, and only a skeleton staff remained at the hospital. Tristan had beenthere too until she’d received an emergency call from her chief. Acutestaffing shortage, he’d informed her. Two of the senior anesthesiastaff were unexpectedly out of commission—one with a broken legfollowing a collision with a goose while he was rollerblading throughthe park along the Schuylkill River, and the other with a family crisis.Since Tristan was the low man—or woman, in this case—on the ladder, seeing as how she’d just started on staff only a few weeks before, she’dgamely saluted and fallen on her sword for the good of her brother andsister anesthesiologists. She’d taken the redeye back the night beforeand gone straight to the hospital. The only thing that made the premature return trip and no sleeptolerable was the memory of the outrageous few hours she’d spentwith a woman who had taught her a couple of things about herself andwhat she enjoyed in bed. For Tristan, that was a remarkable revelation, because, although she didn’t consider herself a player, she enjoyed thecompany of women. And being twenty-nine and single and planningto stay that way, at least for a good many more years, she enjoyed the• 11 •RADCLY fFEcompany of women frequently. So discovering that she liked beingfucked senseless by a petite toppy femme in four-inch heels, whileher hands were restrained over her head, ranked right up there withsome of her most enlightening experiences. So much so she couldn’tstop thinking about it—not the woman, who’d been easy to look atand interesting even when they weren’t in bed, or the admittedly mind-blowing sex—but just how much she liked being completely not incontrol. She doubted anyone who knew her, including herself, wouldhave ever described her as being happy with someone else calling theshots. But she’d been more than happy having Meg direct the action;she’d been exhilarated.“So the meeting was a drag, huh?” Charlie Dixon probed.“Oh yeah. Deadly boring.” Tristan craned her neck and grinnedup at the six-foot-four mocha-skinned trauma fellow before puttingthoughts of hot blondes, power play, and multiple orgasms out of hermind. Charlie only had half a foot on her in terms of height, but he wassvelte, the way some dancers were. He always made her feel like a clodwith her solid build that required sweating three times a week in thegym and pounding the city streets for ten or twelve miles every fewdays to keep her body muscular and not just bulky.“I hear Vegas is a swinging place,” Charlie said mournfully ashe slumped into a rickety chair at the round table in the center of theroom.“Couldn’t prove it by me.”Charlie eyed her suspiciously, but Tristan refused to bite. She’dalways found that the guys she worked with accepted her being a lesbianwithout much fuss, but they were still curious about how she madeout with women. Sex was a popular topic around the OR, since therewasn’t much to fill the long hours between emergencies most nightsexcept talking about sex and sports. She didn’t begrudge the guys theirinterest, but she didn’t play to it either. Maybe she didn’t want to spenda lifetime wit... [ Pobierz całość w formacie PDF ]
